An Iowa City man is in custody after he allegedly threatened to kill people with a loaded handgun this morning.

According to arrest reports, officers were called to The Job Site, a bar at 928 Maiden Lane in Iowa City, at 1:10 a.m. in response to a man acting strangely and carrying a firearm. Police found Neil W. Smith, 25, with a loaded pistol in his possession.

Witnesses said Smith allegedly displayed the gun and said he wanted to “kill people.” Police said Smith does not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and he allegedly told police he carries the gun for protection.

Police said Smith registered a .250 blood-alcohol content on a post-arrest preliminary breath test.
