An Iowa City man has been charged with second-degree theft after stealing video games and a laptop from University Hospitals, but he didn’t quite get what he was looking for in return.
University of Iowa police said Ryane D. Griffey, 23, of 2401 Highway 6, was anticipating getting cash for the electronics he stole from the hospital, but got crack cocaine instead.
According to an arrest report, Griffey’s girlfriend was a patient at the hospital from Sept. 3 to 9. The woman checked out a PlayStation 2, 11 games and a laptop computer, but allegedly never returned the items before being discharged.
Griffey told police he gave the electronics to a woman so she could sell them, but the woman came back with two grams of crack cocaine instead of the $200 he wanted.
The overall value of the property taken was $1,010.
Griffey is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $7,500 bond.
Second-degree theft is a class-D felony, punishable by up to five years in jail and a $7,500 fine.
