Found this map chronicling one of the great societal debates of our time at BuzzFeed this morning. Click it for a larger version. It’s seven years old, but I doubt the landscape has changed all that much.
Clearly, and not surprisingly, we are deep in pop country. Although I’m curious why Iowa County appears to be soda-yellow.
I grew up saying pop exclusively, but my exposure to outsiders at college, and my marriage to a woman from largely soda-centric southern Illinois, has allowed the s-word to creep more and more into my vocabulary.
The whole southern “Coke” as a generic term thing is lost on me. If I order a Coke, it better not be a Pepsi. Although RC is best with moon pies, sure ’nuff.
It’s interesting to see a state such as Alaska, where pop, soda and coke have each taken a strong hold. Missouri appears to be soft drink battleground state.
What’s your preference? I’m going to get a soda.
