The Heisman Trophy Trust threatened to take away Reggie Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy. He let them off the hook by forfeiting the award.
Keeping up? Don’t bother
Whatever. I voted for Bush that year on my Heisman ballot. No one asked me to renounce the vote, and I wouldn’t if they did. Even though, after watching that year’s BCS title game, I was in agreement with everyone else who said Vince Young of Texas should have gotten it instead of Bush.
I’m with a lot of other people who wonder why the same group has never taken away O.J. Simpson’s 1968 Heisman. It seems to me that some of the things Simpson has done in his adult life are a little more heinous than receiving “improper benefits” while a college athlete. They were certainly less legal.
My thinking is Bush feels like a pretty lucky man these days and is being concillatory. He ended a relationship with Kim Kardashian not long ago. If you ever watch five minutes of those Kardashian “reality” shows, you’ve got to think Bush wakes up every morning feeling like he escaped a world of sheer madness. Here, take the silly trophy, he probably thinks. He’s freed himself from some of the most vapid people on the planet. The air is probably cleaner and the food tastes better in his world. He’s starting anew.
