Hawkeye fans blanketed the streets and sidewalks of Iowa City on Saturday, ready for their annual battle with Cyclone supporters.
“It’s a great rivalry,” John Mercer said.
Justin Brame added, “This is crazy. It’s pandemonium. Let’s hear it for the Hawkeyes.”
Iowa State University fans said they didn’t feel welcome in the hometown of their in-state rivals at the University of Iowa.
“When they come to Ames, we don’t give ’em crap. But when we come here, we get sprayed with a hose, stuff thrown at us, spit on,” ISU fan Brooke Walters said.
Another ISU fan, Jesse Godfrey, said, “It’s a little intimidating. But we do the best we can.”
130 arrests this week
At Kinnick Stadium, an express lane for fans who weren’t carrying anything seemed to make admission move much more quickly than last week.
Throughout the day, officers monitored the crowd’s behavior as part of an emphasis on game-day law enforcement. UI police said 130 people were arrested on charges including open container and public intoxication.
But some spectators didn’t seem bothered by the extra enforcement.
“I think it’s good they’re cracking down finally. A lot of underage kids running around who shouldn’t be doing that,” Ross Johanns said.
Mercer said, “It’s not a big deal.”
Back to the bus
A Hawkeye tailgating tradition also came back to life Saturday afternoon. The Magic Bus parked on Benton Street after having to move from its long-standing location on Melrose Avenue.
Attendance numbers were down at the new location despite free macaroni and cheese from sponsor Kraft. But organizers remain optimistic about the bus’s future.
“There’s been a lot of comments about the property. It’s a beautiful property. People are taking the extra walk. I haven’t heard any complaints,” organizer Noah Silvey said. “We’re going to kind of see how it goes from here, and if we don’t have any problems, the city said they’d grant us another permit. We’re hoping everyone’s on their best behavior.”
It’s not clear whether the Magic Bus will return to the Benton site for the Hawkeyes’ next home game.
