Regarding a June 20 letter titled, “Path to morality leads away from religion”: The author states that secular guides to morality work better than religious ones. He stipulates that past violence, hatred, oppression, war, terrorism, genocide and other horrors are attributed to religion and “there is a lack of such atrocities by secularists.”
Webster’s Dictionary defines a secularist as having an “indifference to or rejection or exclusion of religion and religious considerations.” By definition, the following historical leaders were “secularists” lacking in religion, so these leaders should lack atrocities. Consider their behavior:
Adolph Hitler (Germany) — 42 million deaths can probably be blamed on him.
Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union) — responsible for nearly 51 million deaths.
Mao Zedong (China) — caused the deaths of at least 60 million people.
Without some religious compass as a pathway to morality, maybe “secularists” can’t find their way to morality as some think and as history has shown.
