Stephen Hawking, a noted astronomer, contemplates why we haven’t received messages from other planets. He suggests many possibilities. One of them is that the timing of evolution may be off. Intelligent life may go extinct before it evolves fast enough to prevent it. He also suggests that intelligent life may evolve but not in enough numbers to gain the upper hand from the unevolved majority, who aren’t smart enough to prevent their own extinction.
Hawking suggests this may be happening here.
For example, Senators Chuck Grassley, James Inhofe, Jay Rockefeller and others say they are willing to support legislation to prevent climate change (which can lead to human extinction) as long as it doesn’t raise anyone’s electric bill, taxes or cut into anyone’s profits, especially oil, coal or agriculture.
Hawking says we need to start looking for another planet to live on.
Geologists say there have been five major mass extinctions and four were preceded by climate change. They add that we are in the sixth. The main difference now is that humans are triggering this one.
For example, it is not difficult to understand that polluting the air causes carbon dioxide to accumulate and heat up the atmosphere. Soot causes acid rain that falls on the ocean. Acid kills the plankton that produce 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe.
The sixth mass extinction is not imminent but evolving fast enough and in large enough numbers to prevent it is.
