Because of the crazy career I chose, I’ve been fortunate enough to see a lot of different sporting events I doubt I’d have ever witnessed otherwise.
They include: The Masters, Super Bowls, World Series, a Summer Olympics, Final Fours, Rose Bowls, and, of course, the now-defunct Gazette Hawkeye Challenge basketball tournament.
But there is always so much more, and so little time.
That said, here are the top six things on my sports Bucket List, events I’d like to attend (but never have) before I switch careers and become a pirate. These would probably change every day by whim, so don’t take the order of ranking too seriously. This is obviously just for fun, anyhow.
At the end of this post, why don’t you name your Bucket List and reasons for your choices?
6. A Stanley Cup final in one of the NHL’s original six cities: Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, New York or Toronto.
I can’t watch a regular-season NHL game unless I’m there in person. But the playoffs are irresistible to me, even on television. To see a playoff final game in a city steeped in hockey tradition would be enormous fun.
5. A World Cup game of meaning in a nation where soccer is king
I saw two World Cup games in Chicago in 1994. They were, I’m sorry to say, dull. The U.S. is angling for the 2018 World Cup. I’d rather see England get it.
To see a meaningful World Cup match in a nation like England or Brazil or Spain or Argentina . . . This should probably be my No. 1, really. But my American-ness won’t allow it.
4. A Red Sox game in Fenway Park
It’s one of those gotta-do-it-sometime things, but for some reason, it’s never fully grabbed me. My hunch is it would be a bit of a disappointment. But who knows? People sure seem to enjoy going there.
One of my all-time favorite places to see a sports event was Tiger Stadium in Detroit. It was a dump that oozed with character. I’ll never forget going to my seat in the upper deck behind home plate and immediately thinking “I don’t believe this. I’m right on top of the game.”
It was so much better than any of the new ballparks I’ve seen, and I’m a big fan of the one in Pittsburgh.
3. Bristol Speedway for a NASCAR race
I’m not a big NASCAR fan. But if every race were on a track the size of Bristol’s half-mile cereal bowl with seats that go up to the heavens, that would change.
Plus, you can’t just jump off a freeway and roll into the track’s parking lot. It’s a weekend commitment to see a race there, and you better be ready to camp. It’s like Woodstock, but without Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin or Sha Na Na.
2. The British Open
How could this not be great? I’ve covered a few U.S. Opens, and none has really tripped my trigger. Of course, none were at Pebble Beach. But I don’t think you could go wrong at the British, be it at any of its rotation of courses in the U.K.
1. Kentucky Derby
This is one of those uniquely American events. I’m guessing when you’re there for that race at Churchill Downs, you know you’re at a one-of-a-kind deal, with history, pageantry and aura.
Now then, what are yours and why?
Wimbledon? Indy? An Oklahoma-Texas or Florida-Georgia or Idaho-Boise State football game? The only rule is it has to be something or someplace you’ve never experienced in person.
I've been to Fenway and was less than impressed, I would give the nod to Wrigley or Old Yankee stadiums. I would like to go back one more time, I had horrible seats the time I went.
Wrigley Field, like Tiger Stadium, is a dump.
Attend a game at all Big Ten stadiums, Hawkeye Rose Bowl, Attend game at college football powers: Florida, Notre Dame, Texas, USC, etc, Super Bowl, Bears game, Blackhawks and Bulls game, Kentucky Derby, Watch March Madness in Vegas sportsbook.
Saw a match at Wimbledon this year and we're definitely going back in two years, with reserved tickets. An amazing place, the Augusta of England as you can just sense as soon as the tournament ends they want you the hell off their property, until next year.
Old Yankee Stadium was as good as it got and the boss has been to Fenway, said it's OK. And yes, Wrigley is a dump but new Tiger Stadium is beautiful.
I want to play Augusta and that would be good enough for me to die a happy man.
I haven't been to all of the great events that you have Mike but here is my take on a bucket list.
5. A World Cup in Europe. The trip alone would be great and the excitement and atmosphere would be almost without peer. All the different nations, the beer, the different cultures, the beer, you get the theme.
4. A summer or winter Olympics. I'm a big fan of both. Everybody you know is rooting for your favorite team, the USA. It doesn't even matter what sport it is. Tell me one other time that you read about or watched Ice Dancing or Synchronized Swimming? Sports and Patriotism, how does it get any better? If they had Football as a sport and Stanzi was the QB.
3. A World Series with the Cardinals playing. I've never been to a World Series game which would be cool all by itself but it would be so much better with the Cardinals playing. The excitement of seeing it in your favorite teams home park is one of the things that makes the World Series so great.
2. The Final Four with Iowa playing. Hey, so I'm dreaming, but it might happen. I mean it's actually happened before. I know it's been awhile, and it might be awhile before it happens again, but who knows. The Final Four has become one of the premier sporting events in the world and I truly enjoy college basketball and watch almost every game that I can of the tournament so it would be a great trip even without the Hawks. The real excitement though is when the Hawks are involved, and if they have made it to the Final Four, there will be some truly excited Hawkeye basketball fans. When was the last time you saw that?
1. The Rose Bowl with Iowa playing. The excitement and history of the Rose Bowl speaks for itself and the really special part would be of course that Iowa is playing in it. Iowa football has been pretty successful lately by almost anyone's standards. Mention Rose Bowl though and our record and showing has been pretty dismal, actually downright awful, especially everything that I can remember. I would absolutely love to be sitting in that stadium and watching Iowa put their foot on some Pac 10 teams throat. The redemption, the catharsis, the shedding of the pain of watching all those Ronnie Harmon fumbles, seeing some no name Washington running back having a career day at our expense, and just the overall really crappy showings Iowa has had in their Rose Bowl appearances. Only one things for sure, I would have a bunch of company, and oh man, would there be a party…
1. Iowa football game at the Horse Shoe. Actually, I hope to see an Iowa game at every Big Ten stadium, and I've already scratched a few off my list, but if I had to choose one game I have not attended it would have to be Iowa at the Shoe.
2. Yankees vs. Dodgers inter-league baseball game in either New York or LA with my buddy from LA. He's a Dodgers fan and I am a Yankees fan. An old rivalry of two historic baseball clubs.
3. An English Premier League game. I enjoy soccer and the EPL games have the best players, best fans, and the games just look fun.
4. US Open Tennis. New York. Under the lights. Agassi-Baghdatis a few years ago made we want to see a match under the lights. Similar to no. 1, I would really like to see all four majors in person, but the US Open is first on that list.
5. British Open. Always my favorite major golf torney. Especially when it is held at St. Andrews. Also, hope to see all four majors, but the British is no. 1 on the list.
6. Kentucky Derby. For the reasons stated by Mike.
I want to spend a week in Cooperstown with one day being the induction ceremony.
I'd love to go to all of the MLB ballparks for a game (11 down, 19 to go). I'd also love to go the Masters & to St. Andrews for the Open. Like most Hawkeye fans, the Rose Bowl with the Hawks playing would have to top the list though.
This is interesting; for major sports in the US (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA) to really be meaningful it'd have to involve teams I care about so 1) Hawkeye Rosebowl or national champ. 2) Packer's superbowl 3) Brewer's WS title but these get away from the meaning of the article and focus on the teams rather than the event.
I'd need to see something somewhere that is in an incredible setting with very passionate fans. So maybe something like this in ambiguous order: 1) F-1 Monaco GP 2) World Cup Championship game 3) Sail on a media boat covering the America's Cup 4) British Open or Master's 5) Running of the Bulls in Pamplona (may not be considered sporting event but involves running) 6) Summer Olympics
Good post/subject, Mike.
I've always thought it would be fun to see a Kentucky Derby, too.
I would also like to see a "Masters" tourney (at least one day of it) and a Wimbledon tourney match of meaning.
I think seeing some of the Olympics would be awfully cool too… track and field, wrestling, gymnastics among others.
Almost forgot – Rose Bowl. I'm hoping to cross that one off in the near future.
UNC/Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium!
World Series Game 7 @ Wrigley Field. Cubs/Yankees. Wouldn’t get any better than that!

Iowa play and win at The Rose Bowl and The Horseshoe.
Go to game at Happy Valley-200,000 people, it's gotta be fun
Go to game at Husker Stadium
F1 GP in Monoco or Toronto-these events are like national holidays in these countries
Nascar race at Pocono-I just like the layout-each corner completely different and it's a triangle
Participate in the Silver State Classic-They shut down 30 miles of Nevada public highway and run speed trials on it-Run what you brung!
1. See an America's Cup race on the water
2. See Team Favre play at Lambeau Field
3. Summer Olympics – track & field
4. Winter Olympics – ski jumping
5. An Army football game at West Point
1. Mesoamerican ballgame in Central America – just curious
2. Catch a Jai'alai match – "Fastest sport in the world!"
3. Catch Rugby World Cup final in New Zealand 2011 – No pads, full contact sport.
4. Run the original Badwater Ultramarathon – 146 miles from the lowest point in the US to the highest point in the lower 48, all in July.
5. Complete the Enduroman Arch to Arc Triathlon – Apparently only 6 people have ever completed this challege. I could be number 7
Hawkeyes in the Rose Bowl sans Ronnie Harmon's 5 fumbles.
Great question Mike;
Have been to the following:
Game 7 World Series (twice) Twins vs. Braves and Cards I believe (late 80's, early 90's)
Game 7 Stanley Cup-Boston 1970 with my Dad (Bobby Orr is my favorite sports hero)
Was a caddy at the 1975 US Open-Medinah, Chicago (for my home Pro)
All but 3 stadiums in the Big Ten (Indiana, Purdue, Mich St)
Played 7 courses on the British Open rota
Final 4 with the Hawks in 79 (maybe 80)
What I would like to do;
Go to all Big Ten stadiums with my 25 year old son (2 down, now 9 to go)
Qualify and play in another USGA Championship event (made it to an Am in 1991 and Mid Am in 2007
Go to a Super Bowl
Go to a National Championship College Game that includes the Hawks
US Open Tennis Championship (because I love my wife)
Big Ten Championship Football Game
Big Ten BB tournament
I have too many on my list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We attended Hayden's first Rose Bowl, which was a unique experience. I have held on thinking one day my wife and I could do the "in heaven there is no beer" dance in Pasedena with the band, team and fans.
Love your numbers two and one. The British would have to be at St. Andrews. The Derby is just an institution; got to have a mint julep or two. Others include seeing all of the Big Ten football stadiums and all of the MLB parks.
Beyond that, Iowa in a Rose Bowl (is an explanation really necessary?). Second would be a World Series game (maybe game 7) in Wrigley Field. Can you imagine a crazier scene in baseball than that? And, third, for one outside of my immediate fandom, the Iron Bowl. People in Alabama are just crazy about football and that has always looked like one game I need to attend. The World's Largest Cocktail Party would be a close second (or fourth, as it were). Finally, an Iowa wrestling championship in Carver. I know it will never happen again (not enough seats) but it would be fantastic to see.
Great topic. I've been to my share of events as well, including many wonderful afternoons at Churchill Downs (but not for the Derby), a smattering of live major professional sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL), lots of Big Ten college football and basketball, but no golf or foreign venues.
My list includes unique events where I might get close to the action and where the venue has some historic significance, e.g. the aura of the place adds to the spectating experience.
5. PGA at Whistling Straits in Kohler, WI in which Zach Johnson is in contention for the title.
4. Belmont Stakes in which my horse is running for the triple crown and I'm there to place a bet and enjoy the festivities.
3. Detroit Lions (my childhood hometown team) finally making it to the Super Bowl and I'm there with my hometown buddies, with good seats to boot!
2. Hawkeye basketball team playing in the Final Four/National Championship game.
1. Hawkeye football team playing for the National Championship at the Rose Bowl against a traditional power, e.g. USC, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma (vs. Bob Stoops!) with whom they match up well.
I’ve been searching via the internet trying to find some ideas on how to get my personal blog coded, your present design and style together with theme are amazing. Did you actually code it by yourself or did you get a programmer to get it done for you?
I've seen Brett Favre play at Lambeau (while still a Packer)….
I've been to see the Cubbies, numerous times….
I've been to see MJ play while with the Bulls….
I've been to a Hawkeye Rose Bowl ('86)…..
1. See Jack Nicklaus play golf (in person)
2. Go to a Masters
3. Go to an Iowa vs Notre Dame football game
4. Watch Iowa (football) win a National Championship
5. Watch Iowa (basketball) win a National Championship
6. Go to a MAJOR sporting event overseas (The Open Championship, Olympics)
Runner up events: Go to: NBA Championship Game (any), Super Bowl (Packers), World Series (Cubs), and NFC Championship Game-watch Packers beat Vikings (and Favre) to advance to the Super Bowl
First what's not on the list–Living in Phoenix, I have been fortunate enough to go to the BCS championship game. As manufactured an event as it is, still special. I was at the '82 Rose Bowl. If they ever get back, I will go again. Taking my Dad to a World Series game would be number one, but I was fortunate, no, spent enough money, actually, to do this. Dad was physically and mentally worn down after my mom's slow decline and passing, so in that summer of loss, the Diamondbacks kept him going. I got field level seats, Randy Johnson pitching. Irreplaceable memory.
In no particular order
The Masters– CBS and Augusta National go to great lengths to make this look beautiful on television. It works.
The Derby– On my wife's list, too. Day Coat, mint juleps, has to be the full experience.
Opening round of NCAA tournament, with all games on screen, in Vegas–I could do this and have said I would do this, for years. One of these years, I will.
British Golf Triumvirate–In a three-week span, the Open, the Senior Open, and the Ladies Open, on I believe three different courses. Plus, scotch distilleries with tours and samples nearby
Finally, I may have already lost out on this one, but a heavyweight title fight at Caesar's Palace. I say missed because boxing has declined so much that I don't know if the right fight will ever come again.
Really interesting post, thanks! Do you mind if I publish it in my blog, with a link back to you?

Have to agree with the Bristol speedway one but I want to see a race at Talladega. I toured the track in the off season and can't imagine watching a race on a track 2 1/2 miles around!
Also I want to see a lacrosse match in person. Lacrosse seems to me to be played by soccer players with a death wish.
And as a Dodger fan in Cubland, I've been to Wrigley, great experience but I have to make it to Dodger stadium. Now one of the oldest stadiums in the majors behind Wrigley and Fenway I think.
Great, thought provoking article Mike.
Can't disagree with your choices, although Fenway Park wasn't a great experience for me, as the seats were narrow and faced away from home plate, which left me with a stiff neck. And the outside area around Fenway left much to be desired.
Tiger Stadium was a real thrill, especially because I got to sit with the legendary Ernie Harwell for an entire game in the old press box. He was a true gentleman and pointed out many of the oddities and history of the old bandbox. It was truly one of my favorite sports moments.
Old Comiskey Park was a classic when the two taverns were across the street from first base. Very inviting environment, with great food and beer choices, plus dedicated knowledgeable fans. Wrigley is a dump, but the neighborhood atmosphere is interesting.
Old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore was also a special place to see a baseball game.
Yankee Stadium was historic and classic, but nothing special or intimate.
Watching my brother's Mizzou football team defeat Joe Montana and Notre Dame in South Bend was memorable. Great game day atmosphere.
My bucket list would include the following, in addition to your list.
A night game in Dodger Stadium.
Any game at Pittsburgh's PNC Park.
Would love to see my St. Louis Cardinals win a World Series at home just once. I've been to two World Series games at Busch II and one at Busch III, but they weren't Series clinchers.
I would die a happy man if I could witness a Hawkeye national championship game at the Rose Bowl against USC, just to wipe out the foul taste of the Orange Bowl defeat so many years ago, not to mention the three other Rose Bowl losses under Hayden.
Would also love to see a Hawkeye wrestling national championship in Oklahoma somewhere, anywhere, just to see the look on the Okies faces.
Finally, my bucket list would have to include a chance to watch my son win a state championship in football and/or basketball for Iowa City Regina some day.
This article gives the light in which you can observe the reality.

Beautiful web site!
Great comments! For those who said the Rose Bowl, I've covered three of them (two involving Iowa). I've said it before and I'll say it again. There is only one bowl game. It isn't the Orange.
I know the BCS title game is the be-all, end-all, but nothing in college football touches the Rose Bowl for ambience.
I can't believe I omitted Wimbledon. I visited there in October 20 years ago. Snuck a peek at Centre Court, without a net. It was still worth the long train ride from the heart of London.
I've never been to Dodger Stadium. That should have been on my short list, too. Of ballparks I have visited, my faves are Tiger, PNC, old Comiskey, Wrigley and Parc Jarry.

I think that may have been my personal bias coming into play. Cobra has been one of my favorites for a long time and even though I recognize how important the original Rocky is to the whole series, I found the movie itself to be a tad slow and boring. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good movie mind you just a personal preference BTW, Stallone only got paid 30K to do Cop Land.
this is one of the most interesting sites i’ve had the pleasure to come across. You show yourself to really know what youre talking about. Im going to come back routinely just to see what you got. Please keep up the great work.
Definitely agree with what you stated. Your explanation was certainly the easiest to understand. I tell you, I usually get irked when folks discuss issues that they plainly do not know about. You managed to strike the nail right on the head and explained out everything without complication. Maybe, individuals can take a signal. Will likely be back again to get more. Thanks
interesting post, pretty much covered it all for me, thanks.
