Police arrested a woman Tuesday for fabricating a sexual assault accusation.

Officers said Elizabeth M. McDonald, 21, of Iowa City falsely reported she was the victim of a sexual assault in February. According to police reports, McDonald provided a detailed written statement about the alleged abuse, including naming an alleged suspect.

Officers discovered during their investigation that McDonald had lied in her report, and was also making contact with the alleged offender without police knowledge.

In a recorded phone call made to the suspect, McDonald admitted she had made up the allegation and made up the incident out of spite to get back at him. McDonald also said that she had not been assaulted and had filed a false report.

McDonald was charged with filing a false police report and was released from the Johnson County Jail this morning.
