Big Ten expansion candidate: Connecticut

The 11th installment in a series looking at 12 different universities that could potentially join the Big Ten

  • School: Connecticut
  • Location: Storrs, Conn.
  • Enrollment: 24,273
  • Current League: Big East
  • Number of sports offered: 22
  • Academic profile: Not a member of the Association of American Universities but only New England public university with schools of law, medicine, dentistry and social work; 66th (tied with Rutgers) in the U.S. News and World Report National Universities rankings (ahead of Iowa, Indiana and Michigan State)
  • Why it would fit: Picking Connecticut would boost the league’s profile in the New York/New England area. UConn is new to Division I football (2000) but it boasts a new football stadium, built in 2003. UConn is competitive in the Big East, going to bowl games the last three years. UConn’s proximity to ESPN (Bristol, Conn.) can’t hurt the league’s national profile. UConn’s men’s and women’s basketball programs are national powerhouses.
  • Why it wouldn’t: Connecticut doesn’t bring an established big-time football program to the league, and football is driving the Big Ten’s expansion efforts. UConn isn’t an AAU member, which does have impact on Big Ten presidents.
  • Final verdict: At first blush UConn is an outer-rim candidate because it’s located outside of the traditional Big Ten setting. But the school has plenty of upside and the expansion decision is based more on the league in 2040, not 2010. If the league goes to 16 teams and wants to gain traction in the Northeast, it could do worse than Connecticut.

Big Ten expansion candidate: Connecticut
  1. Won't work. Good solid basketball programs but not a solid football program or even an AAU college. That's two major strikes and I don't see them getting any dap from the Big 10.

  22. Im not one for fad diet supplements – but I tried this anyways. Firt off, it’s no miracle diet pill. There’s no such thing. But, if you use this in conjunction with smart eating habits and some form of daily exercise – you will see results. I just finished my first round and I have lost 10 lbs. in about 3 weeks. I used the supplement with a modified Special K cereal diet as well as 30-60 mins a day Dance Dance Revolution cardio (I found that DDR is the best low impact cardio that I don’t get bored with.) The product is very mild on your system, there’s no discomfort that I was aware of. It curbed my appetite, upped my energy so I was actually motivated to workout when I got home from work instead of crashing on the couch and some of the little bonuses I noted from using this product were that my skin has been clearer and I am also sleeping better. I’m so pleased with the results so far, I am already ordering another.
