Only one Kinnick night game this season

In the post below, Iowa-Michigan 2:30 and other kickoff guesses, I speculated that there maybe could be a second home night game for the Hawkeyes in 2010.

There won't be.

First, I heard from a UI official who wrote that Iowa was 99.9 percent sure it wouldn't have another home night game added to the schedule.

Later, I heard from Mark Rudner, Big Ten associate commissioner who handles television scheduling. No one was mad on either side, they just wanted to set me straight, which is great. I can always use that.

From Mark's e-mail:

"The Big Ten Conference has with ESPN/ABC and the Big Ten Network a prescribed formula on prime time game selections.

This process begins on or about March 1 prior to each season, and concludes mid-April. All Big Ten home prime time games for the following season must be selected and confirmed during this time frame."

So, I've been wrong on the July end of things. I thought TV had until July to make night game selections. What you hear in April is it for Big Ten and primetime football games.

More from Mark:

"There will be only one Iowa home prime time game in 2010."

So, that's that.

Iowa's only other night game for 2010 could be the Sept. 10 game at Arizona. That kickoff could be 9:30 p.m. Iowa time (7:30 in Arizona). Here's a little bit on that from the Tucson Citizen's Anthony Gimino.

In light of this, let's recalibrate what we know, now know and think the 2010 kickoffs will be:

9-4 — Eastern Illinois at Kinnick: This has 11 a.m. written all over it.

9-11 — Iowa State at Kinnick: Again, 11 a.m. Maybe 2:30 if it lands on one of the ESPNs. It's a game between two bowl winners and a blood rivalry.

9-18 — At Arizona: I’m thinking 9 or 9:30 p.m. kick Iowa time. Some confusion on channel, but either ESPN or FoxSportsNet. Thinking night game here.

9-25 — Ball State at Kinnick: 11 a.m. Don’t see any other possibility.

10-2 — Penn State at Kinnick: We know this is a 7 p.m. kick.

BYE WEEK: I see a leather recliner and 12 hours of college football this weekend. I might even pony up for the ESPN Game Plan just so I can close things out with the Hawaii home game at 2 a.m.

10-16 — At Michigan: 2:30 p.m., your classic ABC showcase game, before the 7 p.m. game became the classic showcase.

10-23 — Wisconsin at Kinnick: This will be 11 a.m. or 2:30. Could be 2:30 because Wisconsin will have played Ohio State the previous week. A lot of the talk now has Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin as the teams to beat in the Big Ten this year. Luckily, all three teams play each other.

10-30 — Michigan State at Kinnick: I’m thinking 11 a.m.

11-6 — At Indiana: 11 a.m. No Big Ten night games in November, at least for this season. I see that rule being reconsidered.

11-13 — At Northwestern: 11 a.m. Unless the ‘Cats are having that Cinderella season, I don’t see this moving to the 2:30 slot.

11-20 — Ohio State at Kinnick: 2:30 p.m., ABC. If the Big Ten allowed November night games, this one would be 7 p.m. ABC. Alas, it’s a prime 2:30 candidate.

11-27 — At Minnesota: Probably 11 a.m. Remember, Gophs are outdoors now at TCF Bank. If Iowa is running for the Roses (eventhough the Rose Bowl is stuck in a misguided promise to a non-BCS conference school), then maybe 2:30.

So, night vs. PSU for sure and it looks like it at Arizona, but that's it.
