Unhappy news from Ames.
Iowa State basketball player Charles Boozer was arrested Saturday for allegedly slapping and kicking an unidentified woman, according to an Ames Police Department report.
On Monday, Boozer announced in a statement released by Iowa State that he was transferring at semester’s end, and is “seeking treatment.”
Boozer averaged 3.5 points for the Cyclones. He would have had a larger role on the team in the second half of the season because of injuries, but then he suffered a knee injury himself and was shelved. He is the brother of Utah Jazz star Carlos Boozer.
Now, only five scholarship players will return for Iowa State after the losses of several players since season’s end, including starters Craig Brackins, Marquis Hamilton and Justin Hamilton.
I spoke briefly with Boozer last week after the press conference introducing Fred Hoiberg as the Cyclones’ new coach.
“I’ve known who he was since before he came back here,” Boozer said. “I knew who Fred Hoiberg was, Jeff Hornacek, Jeff Grayer, Barry Stevens.
“I’m excited to play for (Hoiberg). I’ve played in the same building for the last three years.”
He could have played a lot in his fourth year. Not good.
