Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall has turned down Iowa

You can scratch men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall off Iowa’s list. Apparently the Wichita State coach declined an opportunity to interview for the vacant Iowa coaching position.

Paul Sullentrop of the Wichita Eagle told me Marshall decided against meeting with Iowa officials earlier this week in Atlanta.

What does this say about Iowa right now? Your thoughts please.

  1. Fine by me. Need to go after Bigger High Profile Coach that likes a challenge.

  2. It is a tough pill to swallow but this program has fallen off the basketball map. Considering my indoctrination to Iowa basketball started with the Lute Olsen era and ever since then we've enjoyed some competitive success – I find it disheartening that the basketball program is in it's current state and we will likely be relegated to a little known coach that hopefully can make us competitive again during his stop. Iowa is not a destination job but rather a rest stop along the journey.

  3. Insomuchas Marshall had an extended run at Winthrop (North Carolina) and is relatively new and not completely 'done it all' at Wichita State I think it says, maybe, something for Marshall more than it does 'against' Iowa. What's more, it doesn't hurt Marshall to show commitment to a school where he just crossed .500 and is still working on getting to a winning conference season. And with all due respect to Marshall even if he was The Guy his hiring today wouldn't have changed the front page tomorrow.

  4. Good, next. And remember that Scott Drew is still coaching….

  5. Easy folks he wasn't OFFERED the job! He only turned down an interview. Who is to say Barta would have even extended another interview much less higher him? Who is to say WItcha has in his contract he cant interview with teams? Speculation and a bunch of mumbo jumbo.

FYI enlanta… Winthrop University is in South Carolina not North (Rock Hill, SC)

  6. My limited understanding was that Marshall's representatives contacted Barta about the opening and not vice versa … My guess is that he "feigned" interest in the position so as to negotiate a raise/extension.

  7. Shocker
