Glenn E. Chatfield’s March 6 letter, “Christians must accept God’s word on gays,” is the latest in a long line of his letters on this issue over several years. I wonder what makes him obsess about it so much and say such mean things.

In his lecturing to us, Mr. Chatfield always manages to overlook the most important messages of the Bible: Judge not. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Love your neighbor as yourself.

Fortunately, Iowa has always been a friendly, live-and-let-live state. We have a proud history of pioneering equality and civil rights. I’m proud of my state for recognizing same-sex marriage. I’m happy for my gay friends and neighbors who want to marry and settle down into loving, monogamous, committed relationships.

Gay people are not some bizarre alien race from outer space; they are people like us. They have the same need for companionship and a loving relationship.
