Cornell College will host a freestyle dual teams from the U.S. and Russia on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Mount Vernon. Doors at the Small Multi-Sports Center will open at 5:30 p.m. that night with action set for 7 p.m. Tickets, which will be available soon, are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
USA Wrestling announced that the Hawkeye Wrestling Club is helping organize the event. Former University of Iowa national champion and current Hawkeye assistant and HWC coach Terry Brands is thrilled about the upcoming exhibition.
“I am fired up about this,” Brands said in a press release. “We have high expectations for both teams. We look forward to this event.”
The U.S. team is stocked with former Hawkeyes and HWC members. The rosters includes Olympians and current Iowa assistants Doug Schwab and Mike Zadick, as well as former Iowa national champion heavyweight Steve Mocco. Paul Donahoe and Lloyd Rogers train in Iowa City and are also on the team.
One spot is still undetermined. The 96kg (211.5 pounds) spot is open, but will be filled by a nationally ranked wrestler, according to the press release.
Russia, the defending World Team champions, are scheduled to compete in duals in Illinois and New York, as well as the New York Athletic Club’s International Open.
Cornell Coach and former Iowa assistant Mike Duroe said the meet promises to be a highly competitive event. He said he expects a lot of wrestling supporters to attend, hoping to draw more than 2,000 fans to the dual.
“We have a very strong group of American athletes,” said Duroe, a HWC. “I have seen so many of our guys develop over the years and I think we will be extremely competitive. The Russians are always tough but there will definitely be a hometown advantage competing so close to Iowa City. We will have a lot of Hawkeye fans there and even more USA Wrestling fans!”
