When The Rubber Band takes the stage at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the Nob Hill Ballroom north of Decorah, Iowa, it symbolizes a return to the '60s. (See today's Ramblin' column in The Gazette.)

Formed in 1966, The Bubber Band had gone by other names before it settled on that one. It played a lot of the popular music of the day around Northeast Iowa, mostly at Matter's Ballroom south of Decorah, which burned in 2003, where it was the house band for four or five years. It also played some of its own material, including the song "My Baby Left Me" which earlier this year surprisingly appeared on a compilation CD, "Psychedelic States: Wisconsin in the '60s." (Click here to see the CD and listen to a clip of the song.)

Doug Koempel, a member of the band, was surprised to hear about the song's reappearance since it was the B side of their recording of "Five Foot Two." The producer of the CD didn't seek permission to use the song from anybody in  the band.

Still, the fact the recording surfaced was enough to call for a reunion. It brought back a lot of memories for the band that broke up in 1970, reunited in 1980, broke up again in 1997.

It brings back a lot of memories for me, too. In high school in the late 1960s in Spencer, Iowa, I became a frequent visitor to The Roof Garden in Arnolds Park along Lake Okoboji, just a 20 minute drive away.

That was the old Roof Garden, the one that had its roof blown off in 1968 and was rebuilt, the one where I saw the likes of The Grassroots, The Buckinghams, Tommy James and the Shondells, The New Colony Six, The Monkees, The Fabulous Flippers ...

What a time that was, the opportunity so close to home to see live and in person the bands you listened to on 45-rpm records and vinyl albums.

So, I wondered, what were the tops songs back then, 40 years ago. Well, here it is, Billboard Magazines Top 100 hits from 1969:
