Rockwell Collins laid off 47 employees at its Melbourne, Fla., and five at its Cedar Rapids operations this week.

The layoffs Monday were due to the slowdown in demand from the commercial aerospace market, according to Dave Gosch, a Rockwell Collins spokesman. He said the business and regional jet markets have been especially hard hit by the downturn.

Commercial markets are the primary markets served from the Melbourne, Fla., operation.
