Ferentz: Rank us ... wherever

CHICAGO -- Because I'm not terribly bright, I have agreed to be on Associated Press' group of voters for its Top 25 football poll.

It's not that hard once, you know, games have been played and results are known. But that preseason poll, how the heck are you supposed to put together a ballot for that without a lot of guesswork?

So, I thought I'd make life a little easier for myself by asking Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz Tuesday where I should rank his Hawkeyes.

"About 50th would be good," he said.

Iowa started lower than 50th last year, with no preseason AP votes. It finished the season ranked 20th.

"It's no big deal to me," Ferentz said about the preseason polls. "You talk about throwing darts.

"Once you get past the first eight or 10, who knows?"

Then he added "We're 20 to 35 at this point."

To which I replied "Oh, 20 now!"

To which he immediately said "To 35."

So if I omit the Hawkeyes from my preseason ballot altogether, Ferentz won't be offended?

"That'd be fine," Ferentz said. "I'd be OK with that. I'm more worried about January. That's the one that counts."
