On Wednesday, The Gazette reported: “Sen. Tom Harkin made history Tuesday by becoming the first Iowa Democrat to win a fifth term in the U.S. Senate.”

Did you know that briefly, Harkin held another job?

Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), right, an occasional guest at Gazette Editorial Board meetings, was "editorial writer for a day" on Friday. It is one of 77 "jobs" Harkin has filled since going to Congress in 1974. The United States (U.S.) senator drew a full day's assignment: column and headline writing, copy editing, etc. At left is editorial writer Mike Deupree. January 9, 1987.
